Why should I get an STD test?

It is important to get tested regularly if you engage in sexual contact to ensure your sexual health and the well-being of your partners. An STD test can diagnose a sexually transmitted disease before symptoms appear. If you do have an STD, it’s important to start treatment as soon as possible to avoid serious side effects and complications from STDs and prevent the spread to your partners.

It may feel embarrassing to talk about, but the reality is that STDs are very common. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that as many as 1 in 5 individuals in the U.S. have an STD – which equals out to nearly 68 million infections.

The CDC recommends the following STD tests:
- All sexually active individuals between ages 13 and 64 should be tested at least once for HIV
- All sexually active women younger than 25 should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia once a year
- Sexually active women over age 25 with new or multiple sex partners should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia once a year
- All pregnant women should be tested for syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis B
- All sexually active gay and bisexual men should be tested at least once a year for syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.
- Sexually active gay and bisexual men with multiple sexual partners should be tested every 3-6 months for STDs
- Anyone who has unprotected sex or shares needles for injectable drugs should get tested for HIV at least once a year

Risk Factors for Contracting an STD

Understanding the risk factors associated with contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) is crucial in preventing the transmission and promoting sexual health. Risk factors for contracting an STD include:

- Engaging in unprotected sex
- Multiple sexual partners
- Having sexual contact at a young age
- Having a history of STDs
- Substance abuse:
- Lack of sexual education
- Having a compromised immune system
- Sharing needles
- Having a partner with an STD
- Unsanitary tattooing or piercing practices

If an STD is left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems, including infertility, heart disease, pregnancy complications, and even cancer.

What to expect during STD testing

Rapid STD testing is simple, affordable, and pain-free. All you need to do is walk into one of our urgent care clinics and let us know you’d like to get tested. Men will be asked to provide a urine sample; women will be asked for a vaginal swab (which they can perform themselves).

You can see a provider during your appointment or simply get your results. If you chose to see a provider, they can review testing and treatment options with you. (You may also need additional evaluation, such as a physical exam, during the appointment.)

You may want to see a doctor during your appointment if you have a known exposure (a partner has tested positive for an STD) or you have symptoms of STDs, including:

- Burning or itching in the genital area
- Changes in urination (including burning during urination)
- Changes to the genitals (rashes, bumps, sores)
- Discharge from the penis
- Pain during intercourse
- Pelvic pain
- Swollen glands
- Unusual vaginal discharge

Your provider can also discuss your sexual health with you to help you stay healthy and reduce your risk of contracting an STD.

How much does an STD test cost?

Our rapid STD testing costs as little as $100 for a walk-in testing appointment. See a provider for just an additional $50.
