Discover why you may need an EKG, what information it provides and where you can go for reliable test results.

What is an EKG?

EKG stands for electrocardiogram. (It’s also called an ECG.) An EKG measures your heart’s electrical activity. During the medical test, a technician will attach 10-12 electrodes to your chest, arms and legs. These electrodes will measure your heart rate and activity. They will stick to you with adhesive pads.

The test only takes about 10 minutes - from the time your tech begins to attach the electrodes to when the recording of your heart’s activity is complete. You will be asked to lie back on an exam table during the test.

You won’t need to do much to prepare for the test. Avoid oily or greasy lotions. If you are a man, you may have to shave your chest to make sure the electrodes can attach to your skin. You should also wear a shirt that’s easy to remove, such as a button-down shirt.

An EKG is a safe medical procedure with little risk. You won’t receive an electrical shock, but you may have a slight rash from the electrodes. Your technician will offer lotion to help remove the electrode stickers and reduce the chance of developing a rash.

What does an EKG show?

Your EKG will help assess the health of your heart. Your heart rate is controlled by an electrical current. An EKG measures how long it takes for the electrical activity to pass through the heart. It can help your doctor diagnose heart disease or other medical problems.
During the test, your technician will record heart activity, such as:
  • Heart rate
  • Heart rhythm
  • Blood flow
  • Electrolyte abnormalities
  • Heart muscle size

Why get an EKG?

Your provider may recommend an EKG if you have complained about chest pain or heart palpitations. It may also be part of your annual wellness exam. You may need an EKG if your provider has noticed a problem during a regular exam. It will check for:
  • Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
  • Heart failure
  • Heart attack

Urgent Care Vs. Emergency Care - Going for EKG

If your doctor has ordered an EKG, an urgent care location can be a convenient and affordable option. An EKG at a hospital tends to be more expensive compared to getting the heart test at urgent care centers. Research has found the average cost of an EKG to be anywhere from $30-$3,000.

Perfect Health accepts many insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare. We also work with individuals without insurance. We accept cash payments, create payment plans and offer a membership for affordable care options. And, our extended hours means we’re open for EKGs and all your medical needs.

Can you go to urgent care for heart attack symptoms?

No, you should never go to urgent care for heart attack symptoms. If you think you or a loved one is experiencing a heart attack, call 911 first. An ambulance and certified emergency medical technicians (EMTs) can provide prompt, life-saving care on the way to a nearby emergency room. Do not attempt to drive yourself or someone else to an ER if you suspect a heart attack.

Do they do EKG at urgent care?

Yes, urgent care centers provide EKG services to patients during non-life threatening situations. Most commonly, that includes tests that are ordered by your primary care physician or one of our physicians during an exam for minor symptoms, like heartburn.
